Join

Creating a space for educational success

The Challenge

Overview: Join is a mobile application that allows students of any education level to create group chats for classes, ask questions to their classmates, discuss assignments, and attach study guides to the group chat. Join was created from ideation to final product, through research and UX/UI design principles.

Duration: 6 Months (2020-21).

Methods: Surveys, Interviews, User Journey Mapping, Affinity Mapping, User Flow, Usability Test, Wireframes, Prototyping.

Problem Statement: Students of every grade level need a way to communicate with other classmates about their classes, ask questions, and share study guides with each other, in order to get collaborative help with their classes.

Tools: Figma, Usability Hub, Miro.

Let's bring students together

It was important that Join included all the aspects of a messaging app for students. This included: easily adding new students, attaching study guides to the chats and so on.

Challenges

My biggest challenge was how to incorporate the content for the overall app. My usability tests proved that some screens were confusing to the users, and there was too much information on frames that were hard to comprehend. I spent most of my time in ideation on this project. I spent a lot of time creating iterations that would provide the users with data that was easy to understand, and that was also displayed as visually appealing. This set back my timeline.

What can be improved?

For this project, I only used Figma and a few other web applications. I would like to expand on using other resources. In the furture, I hope to improve on getting my desired product sooner with no setbacks.

What’s next?

Join has a lot of potential. Completing this product while I am still a college student has allowed me some insight as to what students need in this app. Also, I have a few features that are not yet available on the clickable prototype that I would like to add in the future.
